Dolce & Gabbana Make-Up – Now Launched (Selfridges – UK)
Dolce&Gabbana introduces The Make Up: the ‘new to the world’ collection of colour cosmetics created by Domenico Dolce and Stefano Gabbana.
Dolce&Gabbana is entering the Beauty segment with a collection designed to last and to make history. The Make Up line is a modern classic range of must-have products, conceived with extreme attention to detail: excellence is a choice. Each step of the development of the collection is inspired by the Dolce&Gabbana woman who is after a perfect look each day. Feminine and naturally sensual, she seeks perfection in every way, choosing to surround herself with luxury and glamour. Dolce&Gabbana The Make Up is created for her.
The packaging is pure metal gold with an elegant shape that conveys harmony through the contrast of straight lines and soft, rounded edges. The collection’s palette reflects the Designers’ roots, inspired by the richness of the Mediterranean coasts, the glamour of Hollywood and the femininity of a woman. The luxury formulas are the result of modern technologies which deliver a harmonious blend of quality, pigments and pearl levels.
The colour range boasts duality of hue and texture, raising elegant contrasts that work together to produce harmony. Classic nudes exude a natural sensuality, while bold colours are an expression of the woman’s soul. Each piece, with its precious gold packaging, is designed for the user to showcase in her daily routine. The range is unmistakably full of desirable elegant beauty, created to enhance sensuality and elegance.

The creation
The creation of Dolce&Gabbana The Make Up is an intensely personal project for the Designers, who guided and directed each step of the development of the collection. As a result, The Make Up is a fusion of passion, tradition and sensuality. The Designers tapped their innate creativity in the development of the elegant packaging, envisioning it as the definitive showcase piece, creating harmony via the skilful use of contrasts. As in everything they do, they sought perfection, with extreme attention to detail. As a result, the packaging is an object to show off on top of your vanity and a wonderful accessory: a shiny black outer carton embossed with the Dolce&Gabbana logo in gold conceals a precious gold metal case, lying within a sumptuous black velvet pouch. The metal gold case is embossed with the coveted Dolce&Gabbana logo in a diamond texture.
The Designers were also deeply involved in the development of the palette. They created the colour and texture brief in the language of the fashion world, using contrasting yet harmonious fabrics swatches from their collections as target shades for The Make Up colours. Their idea was to create two key moods; natural perfection for every day and daring look for a memorable impression. As a result, the palette ranges from classic to provocative, with a nod to carnal sensuality.
The collection is linked to traditional femininity but is transcended by a modern vision, encapsulating a passion for all that is feminine – face, eyes, nails, and, above all, lips. The Designers pay a special tribute to the fascination of the 1950s, particularly with the lipstick taking its poetry and scent from the era. They have been constantly part of the creation of the lipstick’s subtle memory. The powdery rose fragrance and the special ‘click’ sound the lipstick makes when closing, are two integral parts of the seductive theatre of applying makeup.
Domenico Dolce and Stefano Gabbana called on renowned Make Up Artist Pat McGrath to transform their brief into product, realizing the collection elements of Dolce&Gabbana The Make Up. Pat McGrath, an industry legend, has been conceptualizing the runway beauty looks for the Designers shows for over 10 years; and now joins the Designers to bring the Dolce&Gabbana The Make Up looks alive on the Dolce&Gabbana runway as well as The Make Up advertising.
The colours and textures
A multi-faceted range, with the use of contrasts, Dolce&Gabbana The Make Up is a palette that takes women from day to night, enhancing sensuality and natural beauty. The Make Up glamourous colours and textures go from nude to vivid, in order for the woman to achieve the perfect look she craves, from subtle – simply magnifying her natural feminine elegance, to unforgettable – allowing her to turn heads when she enters a room.
The shade collection represents the nature of the chameleon-like woman; at times stimulating an innate desire to be bold, and at others the subtle enhancement of natural features. Each item within The Make Up collection has been uniquely crafted and specially embellished as a finished work of art with distinctive details and unique intricacies while remaining modern and practical. Striking colour offerings abound from light to dark, muted to vivid and classic to technicolor creating countless possibilities.
Enlivened textures present endless inspiration, from the turbulent landscape of Stromboli’s charred, glistening black sand; to the high gloss runways in Milan. Sumptuous interpretations of velvet, suede and pearl, pair with bold matte, lacquer and wet looks to create extraordinary combinations and contrasts.
The Face - Scarlett Johansson
Extraordinarily striking and unforgettable, Scarlett Johansson captures the desirability of Dolce & Gabbana’s first cosmetics collection, The Make Up. She symbolizes the essence of the modern chameleon, the perfection of a Natural Beauty as well as the provocative woman, the desire to express the range of her personality from seductress to innocent, all of which is at the heart of the collection. Making her film debut in 1994, New Yorker Scarlett Johansson is the embodiment of the Dolce&Gabbana woman, talented, sensual, ever changing and universally confident.
As a symbol of modern day glamour she personifies a woman’s ability to transcend the Dolce&Gabbana look and approach to night and day, classic and vivid. The duality of the range with its nudes and strong colours meant the Designers needed someone special to bring it to life. No one could do that better than Scarlett Johansson. Her lips, eyes, hands and beautiful skin make her a stand out, defining her intoxicating appeal on and off the screen. “We wanted someone who effortlessly seduces, who incites desire and admiration in others” say Domenico Dolce and Stefano Gabbana, “we took one look at Scarlett Johansson and fell into a trance, she was the face to embody the woman that every woman wants to be”
Celebrating her femininity, she magnificently projects the Dolce&Gabbana allure in the beautiful and sensual campaign images. The campaign was inspired by the immortal beauty, Marilyn Monroe and Scarlett Johansson modernises this play on feminine character with supreme elegance and luminous sensuality. Scarlett Johansson’s portrayal of graceful glamour changes in each spectacular shot, resonating with the versatility of the Dolce&Gabbana The Make Up collection. Together, Scarlett Johansson and The Make Up penetrate with a breathtaking lasting impression.
“Make up means a lot to me! I’ve always loved wearing make up and I think a lot of that came from watching my mother at her vanity when I was a little girl. I would watch her transform herself from day to night and thinking she was the most beautiful woman I’d ever seen” says Scarlett Johansson. “Every woman can feel as a diva everyday simply by applying red lipstick!”
“I’m so thrilled to be a part of this very exciting, luxury make up collection. It feels wonderful to be the face of product you believe in. All of the colors are bold and user friendly and the quality of the collection is flawless”. “I think that a Dolce&Gabbana woman is a glamorous and confident woman and I think that wearing this make up will enhance those qualities”.
