Akosua Afriyie-Kumi is a BA (hons) Fashion graduate from Kingston University and Graduate Fashion Week 2009 Gala Show finalist. Her final collection is strongly inspired by African prints and structured shapes taking inspiration from words and phrases such as ‘change’, ‘breaking away from restraints’, ‘establishing an identity’, and ‘rebellion’. Taking strong influence from the bold colour used by Nigerian fine artist Yinka Shonibare, Akosua developed a collection inspired by one of the artist’s photographic images of an Astronaut wearing a spacesuit in African fabric. These bold patterns are teamed with exaggerated and futuristic shapes such as belled hip volume and thermal body hugging jumpsuits that accentuate and manipulate the female form. Akosua now hopes to work for a leading fashion label, her dream role being at fashion house Balenciaga. Email: University: |
