Alexandra Verschueren is an MA Fashion Design graduate of the Royal Academy of Fine Arts Antwerp. Inspiration for Alexandra’s graduate collection is drawn from the work of German Artist Thomas Demand and a sketch from The Armando Iannucci show of a couple being shown around a house made of paper. Both portray paper as a strong medium and one that lays bare the artificiality of everyday life. Alexandra uses paper, every designer’s starting point for a collection, and morphs the raw material into organic shapes incorporating other raw fabrics. The shapes are inspired by Japanese ‘origami’ architecture with folding techniques forming bold structures. Colours and hand drawn prints are influenced by the crude first strokes of a child’s drawings, blotting paper and chalkboard. Alexandra’s MA collection was awarded the Momu Award giving her the opportunity to showcase her designs at the Antwerp Fashion Museum. Other merits include the Flanders Fashion Institute Award and Horlait-Dapsens Foundation Award. Alexandra is soon relocating from Antwerp for New York to gain further design experience.
